Area still one of London’s safest
 |
| Chief Superintendent Tony Dawson BE9850 |
BEXLEY has kept its reputation as one of the safest boroughs in London, with another fall in recorded crime.
Borough commander Chief Superintendent Tony Dawson said around half of the reductions in crimes such as assault and criminal damage are down to measures taken by police, in partnership with Bexley Council.
These include the crackdown on licensing and underage drinking, the introduction of dispersal zones and alcohol-free zones and the work of street pastors.
Criminal damage was down from 3,997 in 2006/07 compared with 3,406 in 2007/8.
Assaults were also down from 2,889 to 2,422.
Rape was down from 35 cases in 2006/07 to 21 last year, which Mr Dawson attributed to the success of Bexley's Sapphire team, which boasts a 90-per-cent detection rate.
He said: "We are using murder inquiry techniques and Bexley is second to none in investigation and support for victims."
Domestic violence figures have been another success, with incidents down from 1,193 to 1,036, and Bexleyheath's specialist unit has the highest detection rate in the Met.
But Mr Dawson urged caution with regard to the drop in racist crime, where incidents fell from 353 to 227.
He said: "I am not celebrating because I am not convinced all the racist incidents are being reported."
Mr Dawson urged people to come forward if they suffered racial abuse, using third parties to report the incident if necessary.
But the end of year crime figures did not produce all good news.
Domestic burglaries were up from 1,105 to 1,244, despite a dedicated burglary team.
Mr Dawson said he had boosted numbers on the team with experienced officers and more cars.
He added: "We have now stabilised the situation and we are doing what we can to deter prolific offenders."
Thefts from cars is also up, from 1,191 to 1,572, although Mr Dawson claimed it was still well below the figures for other, similar
boroughs.
Mr Dawson pledged burglary and assault rates will come down this year.
He said: "Crimes of the most concern to the public are down by a fifth and we are planning to be even more successful next year."

Some parts of Thamesmead come under the Bexley Borough surely these areas cannot be considered as safe? I wouldn't walk around Erith, Slade Green or Thamesmead after dark. Have you seen the people that inhabit these areas?

Its become the norm in any buisness to massage statistics. The appears to be no shame in fiddling the figures to meet the needs of management/bosses to pretend they have met/exceeded the targets set to them. As it is seen as failure for them. So the brown nose snifflers lie to please the various departments rather than tell the truth. Either it be on crime, immigration or performance they have made. Its no longer fashionable to tell the truth much better to lie and stick you head in the sand as chaos rules in the UK.To make it even worst quite often these lying idiots are at the top end of the pay scales. Whilst hard working Nurses real Engineers and many more lower payed employees work the butts off to keep the UK from sinking into a hole which these overpaid morons are digging us into. They should all be sacked for the lies and the deceit.Remember one day the truth will OUT.

Tess, if you feel so safe it is obvious that you are on the same level as some of the more unsavoury characters in the neighbourhood.
Is you dog a staffordshire bull terrier by any chance?

I notice that Andy has gone and lost his temper again.
Still, I would not be particularly cheerful if I was reduced to living in Erith.
Judging by Andy's punctuations skills I dare say he cannot get a better paid job - if he works at all that is.

Did you see Bexley village on St George's Day? There must have been at least 4 fights especially from Tracks Bar so its not perfect there, although if there is anyone out there who can really believe that Erith, Thamesmead, Sidcup, Orpington or any other surrounding area is better than Bexley can you please show me your evidence! I live in Orpington

I dont wear tracksuits only a suit for the office. I have no tattoos and I wear whatever earrings I feel will compliment my outfit.
Not that I have to explain myself to you. I am just fed up with peoples attitude that just because someone is from Slade Green, Erith, Thamesmead or Abbey Wood means they must be a chav. I have been in employment since I was 15 years old and have never been out of work since. Myself and my boyfriend saved very hard for the last 5 years so that we could buy our first property last year. I have many froms who are also from these areas who are not in the slightest bit chavvy and have also worked very hard for what they have.
Please please do not asssume that just because someone is from an area which you do not approve of means that they are any less a person you are and deserve to be spoken to in the way you have been.

Clair, when one reads that you left school at 15 it is not really surprising that you had to save for 5 years in order to buy a house.
Why not try some night classes to enable you to gain a qualification and a better job, then you can leave [bold]Erith[/bold] behind forever?

I actually thought it was a lady(use the term lightly) until my friend told me who it is, how funny!

Where did I state that I left school at 15? I had a job whilst I was in my last year at school. I gained very good grades and went on to gain further qualifications. I actually work at well respected insurance brokers in the City where I am still studying to gain further qualifications. So please do not judge or think that you know me because of my postcode.
I do not feel the need to admit to any mistakes as I do not believe I have made any. I am a hard working have always paid my way, never accepted any handouts and never been in trouble of any kind.

Anyway off to see my posh friends in Barnehurst now, just cant wait to breath the fresh air as I drive out of Erith......NOT!
I passed comment on the fact you continue to rave on about how bad Erith is, I didnt need to pass comment on the article because a bit like what comes out of your wee mouth its all made up rubbish. The reason crime figures are down maybe because people dont bother reporting them as they know its a waste of time and without evidence the police cant press charges.......you happy now.

Pink Kitten and Lord Erastus
Had an affair one day
The horse was in its stable
The missus gone away.
Pink Kitten wore a collar
And a furry pink pom pom
Lord Erastus he wore nothing but the sheets he lay upon.
But their lovemaking was shortened
by a knocking on the door
For the butler had been present
He reported what he saw!
It hit the local headlines
The crime rate had increased
Lord Erastus has been sentenced and ne'er to be released!
Pink Kitten has been rehomed
After a lengthy stay,
of rehabilitation
with the good ol' RSPCA!

lmao! At least you had the temerity to call them poems! Those 'spam flares' were 5 minute wonders and took as much time to create. However I am just as uninspired to bother to conjure something a little more polished that even I might call a 'poem'.
Crime is UP despite the neatly written statistical lies! We've just got better at glossing!
There is nothing nice about Bexley Borough or the whole of the UK at the moment, and seeing as the whole world is rapidly spiralling downwards in a dizzying whirl of chaos there is nowhere to run to my feckless foes. Caught between the devil and the deep blue sea it seems! lol!

Does Tony Dawson actually believe the bull he spews? The reason the figures appear to be down is that people have lost the will to report crime, in the full knowledge that they are more than likely wasting their time. I personally have reported 2 crimes in the past, one was a prowler seen in the gardens at the back of houses, the Police turned up 12 hours later. The second time a knife was held at my daughters throat by a stranger in broad daylight at a bus stop in Sidcup. The Police failed to turn up at all. So Mr Dawson get real and stop promoting Police service that is 2nd rate.

Matt from Welling i am sorry to hear about your daughter that must of been very frightening. We had the opposite 2 men tried getting into a house opposite me and had run off when realised they had been seen, we had 3 police cars and loads of police looking for 2 men who were long gone! The police need to sort out their priorities.
